The wine already consumed in Mesopotamia and on the shores of the Caspian Sea about 6000 BC, but only by aristocrats; commoners and peasants drank mead and beer. Hippocrates, the “father of Western medicine” considered the wine part of a healthy diet and used it as a vehicle to deliver drugs to their patients.
Religion, literature, mythology and Greek medicine granted the wine a special place. In Egyptian papyri of 2200 BC wine is mentioned as medicine made by man. And even in the Bible, the Apostle Paul recommends occasionally a little wine.
Resveratrol ..?
For over 20 years scientists have studied the resveratrol, a substance found in many plants, but at higher concentrations in the skin of grapes and red wine in particular. It has demonstrated its healthy properties because of its antioxidant value, especially to protect the heart, help in the fight against cancer and relieve inflammation.
The body’s metabolism causes oxidant molecules called free radicals that can alter DNA and other vital cellular structures such as mitochondria. Antioxidants deactivate these harmful molecules and protect the health of the body. Due to its high antioxidant content, red wine fulfills this function,
But the latest study suggests that red wine can also be useful to burn fat and lose weight. This is due to the action of resveratrol but also to a chemical called Ellagic which can slow the growth of fat cells and stop the formation of new fat cells.
A study by the University of Washington and one of the Harvard Medical School say that resveratrol in red wine has the ability to convert white fat into beige fat which is easier to burn.
Over 13 years, Harvard scientists studied 20,000 women and found that those who drank two glasses of red wine a day, especially before going to sleep were 70% less likely to be overweight and could lose weight faster.
Another study also found that resveratrol helped suppress appetite which may be useful in weight loss programs.
Other benefits of drinking red wine in moderation include reducing the risk of cancer, especially colon cancer due to a substance called quercetin, prevent risks of heart attacks and strokes and remove blood clots, responsible for 50% of stroke
In addition, resveratrol has anti-inflammatory action, stimulates the production of nitric oxide, a potent vasodilator, including reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease, protect against the effects of aging and obesity.
